SCOTUS Guts Voting Rights Act, Attacking Multicultural Democracy
Las Vegas, NV– On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a 6-3 opinion on Louisiana v. Callais, striking down Louisiana’s second majority Black district and eroding protections in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that have helped create a multiracial democracy.
Laura Martin, Executive Director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, issued the following statement:
“Our democracy is strongest when everyone has an equal voice. Since 1965, the Voting Rights Act has protected Black and brown voices from continued marginalization and dilution. This latest decision is just another example of the Supreme Court destroying decades long precedent and fundamental rights at the wave of a hand. The Voting Rights Act was fought and bled for over decades so that future generations of people of color can have a say in who is representing them. This is a clear attack on the growing political power of Black and brown folks, and will result in more rigged electoral districts that dilute our voices.
This latest attack on voters and our democracy doesn’t occur in a vacuum and it won’t be the last. The Trump Administration and MAGA extremists have attempted to overturn election results and are threatening to deploy ICE to intimidate voters. Voters hold the power, not politicians. We will fight back”
