PLAN Statement on the Events of January 6th, 2021

A Direct Attack on the Voice of the People

LAS VEGAS, NV — The horrifying events that happened January 6th at the U.S. Capitol is the expected endgame of an ideology that thrives off division, the devaluing of lives as well as the votes and voices of Black, Indigenous, and people of color in order to protect the wealth and privilege of a small few. This was a direct attack on our democracy fueled by President Trump’s refusal to accept the results of an election where 81 million people made their voices heard.

This is what treason and White Supremacy look like: an angry mob of armed white people inside of our Capitol, threatening our government and our voices. Violence is inevitable in a society that values power and wealth while shaming and blaming people for having an accent, or struggling to make ends meet. We will only root it out when we center the needs of the people who have been repressed, and prioritize accountability over reconciliation. President Donald Trump must be immediately removed from office. We call on Nevada’s congressional delegation to join Rep Horsford and Rep Titus and support Rep Ilhan Omar and Rep Ayanna Pressley’s articles of impeachment, as well as Rep Cori Bush’s resolution to expel members who participated in the attacks.

The 2020 election has been certified by Congress, setting the path so President-elect Biden can be inaugurated and his administration can begin to act on their commitments to provide relief and support to Americans struggling to thrive in the COVID economy. The will of the people must be upheld, especially after an unprecedented run-off election in Georgia. Black women delivered a Senate majority and elected the first Black man to be a U.S. Senator for Georgia. Now is the time to be bold, respectability politics must be set aside for the sake of our country.
